SUMMER READING FOR GIFTED ENGLISH II

Your sophomore year is a challenging year, focusing on many of the great classics. Plan to stretch your abilities. In order to prepare, you need to read the three following works during the
summer.


 

English II (G) Summer Reading 2011

 

Welcome! English II Gifted is an advanced novel-based course consisting of a combination of literature analysis, writing, and grammar. Students will read at least one class novel along with one choice novel per six weeks. At least one formal writing assignment will be assigned each six weeks, and the study and practice of grammar is ongoing throughout the school year.

 

Required Reading:

Mythology by Edith Hamilton

*Test on Mythology the first week of school

The following selections will be covered the first six weeks of school, but you are strongly encouraged to read these over the summer; otherwise, you will be reading a novel per week during the first six weeks.

The Alchemist by P. Coehlo

Demian by Hermann Hesse

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

The Odyssey by Homer

The following is a tentative reading list for the year:

The Inferno by Dante

Drama: Medea, Antigone, and Julius Caesar

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

The Once and Future King by T.H. White

1984 by George Orwell

Short stories and poetry

In addition to required class novels, you will be required to read a choice novel each six weeks. At least 300 pages per six weeks is required, and selections should be approved by me.
